Spend the money to get salon quality, whichever brand you choose you'll be happy. I believe a recent advancement is steel guards, although I've never broken or had a problem with plastic ones. Andis 5 speed Excel is the way to go. Be aware that your consumables will include clipper oil, blade drives, and blade wash in addition to your blades themselves.
